Ninja Salvaging Character - Starting Out

The next new character venture that I would like to blog about is a salvaging character. Particularly, the ninja salvaging character. For a very new player to EVE Online, salvaging offers one of the best ISK returns. The ninja salvaging path offers a several interesting twists to the otherwise rather tedious profession.

Let me start off by stating that I do not necessarily condone ninja salvaging activities. Definitely, some people are really annoyed by it. However, ninja salvaging falls into the "grey" area of what's deemed "criminal activities" in EVE Online. The game mechanics allows for all sorts of griefing and pirate activities. Ninja salvaging provides a nice transition if that's what you're aiming for, or just provides something different to try. It certainly leaves some interesting stories to tell now and then.

Technically, only looting the wreck will cause you to turn "red" to the player who owns the wreck. That is, that player can attack you if they so choose. Salvaging the wreck, on the other hand, leaves you neutral. This is where most of the contention comes from. Some players regard the wreck salvage as rightfully theirs, but they can't act against someone who they consider is "stealing" their salvage.

Salvaging any wreck will not give you an aggression timer, and the game mechanics dictate that nobody truly "owns" the salvage until it is, well, salvaged. Regardless, if you try this activity, you will meet people who get very angry with you. Rest assured, they can't really do anything against you except send you strongly worded letters and perhaps wardecing your corp.

Very often, you will encounter lone mission runners who don't even care about wrecks. One way or another they will simply go to waste. Some mission runners will abandon all wrecks and let you take the loot. Others won't pay attention to you. And then there are some who will be very hostile, so be prepared for some anger directed your way.

This particular series of blog posts is aimed at both showing how to avoid ninja salvagers, fending off decreasing your potential income and show those who are interested on how to ninja salvage. With that in mind, I look forward to your angry letters.

Unlike my New Mining Character series, I won't be posting daily updates on skill training. Instead I will just focus on various tips and tricks and techniques of ninja salvaging, offering guidelines to what skills to train and how to scan down ships that are doing the missions. I will try my best to include videos with most of my posts. And here's the video of Character Creation!

I picked the Minmatar character primarily because Vigil is the best ninja salvaging frigate available. As usual, you can just train up Minmatar Frigate skill to minimum level 2 (max it out as much as you can) and use whatever race you'd like to use. You can even try using similar frigates of other races for the job.

If you're just starting out, definitely go through the Exploration career agent missions. They will supply you with necessary skill books and, more importantly, a tutorial on how to do rudimentary scanning. Without knowing how to do that well, you won't be able to look for missioning ships in deadspace complexes. And if you're really new to the game, it's a good idea to go through the other tutorial missions before diving too deep into a specific "career" in EVE. There's lots of possibilities in this sandbox game and the best thing is that you never have to limit yourself to just one. Press F12 to get the help menu up and then "Show Career Agents" button. That will give you a list of career agents available to you. Each school of every race will have its own list, showing agent names and locations.

As for the skill training, right after creating the new character, I started training training:
- Minmatar Frigate III
- Astrometrics I
- Astrometrics II
- Astrometrics III

The Astrometrics skill I got from the very first Exploration tutorial mission.

I hope you enjoy this next series of posts. I will try to post updates at least weekly. If you find yourself on the short end of the ninja salvaging op, don't get too upset, it's just a game and you likely wouldn't be salvaging in the first place. Otherwise, have some fun and earn lots of ISK!
